I volunteered at my children's school for many years as a parent
chaperone on trips. We always were given 5 kids to a parent to take
care of. One trip involved taking the subway train downtown to
Runnymede Zoo. The kids were in Grade 3. Imagine 48 eight year olds
and about 10 adults in the subway, When I saw that "Harry" was
misbehaving right near the train tracks and was defying his Chaperone.
Without a thought of consequences I went right up to "Harry" and whacked
his behind for him. He was so startled and hurt that he looked at me
with wide eyes in surprise.... After that "Harry" was on his best
behaviour.... Little did I know how much I had effected "Harry" with
that whack until 5 years later on another trip in a school bus I
overheard "Harry" tell the school principal why he was such an
upstanding and well behaved young man today..... He said he will always
remembered a parent who took the initiative to correct him for the very
first time in his young life when no one else had ever bothered. He
turned around looked me in the eye and said. "Thank you Mrs. Dona.)"
